Holi festival begins in all the temples and villages of Braj with the fall of Holi on the Basant Panchami in Braj. It lasts for 40 days. Especially the Holi festival here starts from Falgun Shuklapaksha Ashtami i.e. Laddu Phek Holi. The festival of Holi is celebrated with great pomp in Gokul, Vrindavan and Mathura. Holi with laddus, flowers and sticks is also celebrated here before the colored Holi. Devotees from all over the country and around the world come to attend the Holi of Braj.

There is a legend behind the tradition of Laddu Holi that Sakhis were sent to Nandgaon with an invitation to play Barsane Holi in Dwapar Yuga. Kanha's father Nand Baba accepted the invitation of Radharani's father Brishabhanji and sent the letter of acceptance to the hands of a priest called Panda.

At Barsane, Brishabhanji welcomed Panda from Nandgaon and gave him laddus to eat. Meanwhile, the Gopis of Barsane colored the panda with Gulla. What was it then that Panda also started throwing Laddu on Gopis.
